Dropdown Survey Questions

The right choice when your option list is long

Dropdown survey questions show a collapsed select menu - respondents click to expand and pick one option. They are best for long lists (countries, industries, time zones) where showing all options as radio buttons would be unwieldy.

What is a dropdown survey question?

A dropdown survey question presents options inside a collapsed select menu. Respondents click the dropdown to reveal the full list and pick one item. Like single choice (radio), only one selection is allowed. The advantage over radio buttons is screen efficiency - a dropdown keeps long lists compact.

When to use

Use dropdown questions for long, standardized lists where respondents know the answer and just need to find it: country, state, industry, company size, time zone, or year. For short lists (under 5 options), use radio buttons - they are faster because all options are visible at once.

Best practices for dropdown questions

1

Use dropdowns only for lists with more than 5–6 options - for shorter lists, radio buttons are faster.

2

Sort options alphabetically for standardized lists (countries, industries) so respondents can find their answer quickly.

3

Avoid dropdowns on mobile for very long lists - they can be cumbersome. Consider a searchable input instead.

4

Include a blank first option ("Select one...") rather than defaulting to the first option.

5

Dropdowns hide options until clicked - avoid them when you want respondents to consider all options before choosing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dropdown survey question?

A dropdown survey question presents options in a collapsed select menu that expands when clicked. Respondents pick one option. They are best for long lists (countries, industries) where showing all options as radio buttons would take too much screen space.

When should I use dropdown vs. single choice (radio buttons)?

Use dropdowns for lists with 7+ options (countries, industries, years). Use radio buttons for shorter lists of 2–6 options. Radio buttons are faster because all options are immediately visible - no clicking required.

Can dropdown questions allow multiple selections?

Standard dropdown menus allow single selection only. For multiple selections from a long list, use a multi-select dropdown or a checkbox list. In Mapster, use "Multiple Choice" for multi-select scenarios.

Do dropdown questions affect survey completion rates?

Dropdowns slightly reduce completion on mobile because they require extra taps. For mobile-heavy audiences, consider radio buttons for short lists or a searchable input for very long lists. Keep the list ordered logically so respondents can find their answer quickly.
